DSGI Group, the owners of Dixons, Currys, PC World, etc do refurbished laptops which are excellent quality products. They're only refurbished in that, they were sold to a customer, the customer took the laptop out of it's box, didn't like it and wanted to return it or found a minor fault and returned it to the shop. The laptop was checked, repaired, repackaged and now being sold as a refurbished laptop. I have purchased two refurbished HP's from PC World and both have been great.

On the Dixons web site, click on Computing > Refurbished Computing > Refurbished Laptops

http://www.dixons.co.uk

Prices start from around £199.00 but some models are sold out.

Alternatively I used Google Shopping (Froogle) to find refurb laptops.

To do this, go to the Google Shopping site:

http://www.froogle.co.uk
http://www.google.co.uk/products

Type in refurbished laptops and click Search.

In the results, select "Sort by Price" on the right hand side, then scroll through the pages until you see the laptops for sale.

The cheapest laptop I saw was £135.00.

It's important to make sure you read up on the seller of the laptops. Google conveniently suppies a "Seller Rating" to help you read up on the seller. Avoid buying from Ebay.

Hope it helps.

Refurbished Macs are a little cheaper, and work just as well. You're not the first person to use the Mac, but either way, you still can get Apple Care--the amazing customer service and protection plan Apple is known for. I'm a freshmen in college, and I just ordered a Macbook Pro 13 inch a few weeks ago. I didn't have a laptop in high school, and just used my mom's Dell at home to type up the many papers I had. I lived.

But, a lot of freshmen last year at my high school couldn't live without their laptops because they couldn't keep up with my History teachers when he talked. Apparently, British accents are too hard to understand.

If you need a laptop, I'd get a Dell for high school, and make a deal with your parents to get a new Macbook for college. That way you get all the cool accessories you want with it--which are very pricey to say the least.

Here is a great netbook that would work well for college use. It is under $ 300 and more importantly, is highly rated by owners of the machine. See link for more details.

I have no idea why people are telling you to get macbooks becuase they are way over your price limit. {900 - 1300}.
Anyway: I my self am shopping for light laptops and i found some of these you might like also.

1.) http://www.buy.com/prod/gateway-ec5802u-15-6-led-notebook-core-2-duo-su7300-1-30-ghz-blue-1366/q/sellerid/26227071/loc/101/212442505.html

2.) http://www.jr.com/hp/pe/HP_DV63120US/

3.) http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod2480189&pid=CSE_Froogle&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku2894114.

4.) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/759232-REG/HP_Hewlett_Packard_LH608UA_ABA_Pavilion_g6_1a65us_15_6_Notebook.html.

5.) http://www.buyregalo.com/products/HP-Mini-110%252d1036TU-polished-White-Swirl-imprint-finish-(Limited-Edition!!!)--HP.html.

I would go with number four if i were you , but its your choice depending on memory, color, style, company...etc...

also i prefer hp's cause my old laptop and the one im using now is an hp and its never broke or messed up on me...just make sure you get nortan anti-virus and you are then fine.
Hope this helped!
